Subhasish Chakraborty

Biography

Dr Subhasish Chakraborty obtained his first class Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and subsequent Bachelor of Technology degree in Radio-Physics and Electronics from the University of Calcutta, India (1991-1997). His research career began as a Research Engineer with Philips Telecommunications. At Philips (1997-1998) he developed high-frequency electronic circuits and phase-lock-loop synthesizers for application in private mobile radios, base stations and systems.  In October 1998 he went to the University of Cambridge as a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholar where he obtained his post-graduate degree in Microelectronic Engineering and Nanophotonics jointly with the Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics and the Department of Engineering.  Following doctoral (1999-2003) and post-doctoral research at the University of Cambridge (2003-2005)  and at the University of Leeds (2005-2007), he moved to the University of Manchester as a Lecturer to develop terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) and associated nanophotonics and plasmonics technologies (2007). Dr Chakraborty is currently working as a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor). 

Dr Chakraborty’s programme of research encompasses the theory, simulation, nanofabrication and measurement of aperiodic photonic lattices as applied to the fields of silicon nanophotonics and terahertz quantum cascade lasers.  Dr Chakraborty, as sole Principal investigator, has successfully completed a major EPSRC + MOD Award amounting to £0.7M. As part of this research programme, he has initiated, from scratch, the terahertz quantum cascade laser-based photonics research and has built a unique experimental facility at the University of Manchester.

Dr Chakraborty has served as referee for the UK Research Councils and as external PhD examiner for the Universities of Cambridge and Essex.
