Overview

Ellen is senior lecturer and director of the Centre for Pharmacy Workforce Studies (www.pharmacy.manchester.ac.uk/cpws/)

She is responsible for the teaching of pharmacy law & professionlism to our undergraduate MPharm students, particularly in 2nd and 4th year.  She is therefore joint unit lead for the 2nd year 'The Pharmacist' unit, where she delivers most law lectures.  As part of her teaching role, Ellen also supervises supervises final year MPharm student projects, most of which are presented at conferences, and some are published as full academic papers.

Ellen's research interests align well with her area of teaching, as her interest over recent years has been in performance, professional regulation, pharmacy policy, workforce and education.  In 2014, she won the 2014 Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s prestigious Pharmacy Research UK award, which "recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of pharmacy practice research and has the potential to become a leader in the field."  Ellen received this awared in recognition of her research into prescription charges, pharmacy policy, professional regulation and education. Ellen's expertise is recognised through her membership of a range of external panels, such as the RPS publication 'Medicines, Ethics and Practice,' the GPhC's Continuing Fitness to Practise Advisory Group, and I am also part of the Department of Health policy advisory group Rebalancing of Medicines Legislation and Pharmacy Regulation - Partners’ Forum (for the latter two representing the Pharmacy Schools Councils).

Ellen supervises a number of PhD and MPhil students (two to completion).  She has a strong publication record, ensuring timely dissemination at academic and professional conferences, and effective engagement with various stakeholders.  To date, she has published over 40 full peer reviewed journal papers.

With the university being strong on social responsibility, and having a commitment to giving something to the local community, Ellen is a 'big sister' for an organisation called 'Girls Out Loud.'

 

Biography

Ellen Schafheutle is a pharmacist, originally qualified in Germany and registered in the UK since 1994.  Following an MSc in clinical pharmacy and a PhD in pharmacy practice in the University of Manchester's Drug Usage and Pharmacy Practice Division (DUPPD), Ellen secured one of only three National NHS Primary Care R&D Post Doctoral Awards, as the first pharmacist from an open field of health services researchers.  Ellen joined the Centre for Pharmacy Workforce Studies (CPWS), which is part of DUPPD, in 2007, and she became its Director in 2014.

Following a career with a clear research focus, Ellen became a lecturer in 2009 and then senior lecturer in 2013.  Since then, Ellen has taken the lead in teaching law, professionalism & professional regulation in pharmacy at the Manchester Pharmacy School.  Her expertise is recognised through her membership fo the advisory panel to Medicines, Ethics & Practice.

In 2014, Ellen received the RPS Pharmacy Research UK award, which recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of pharmacy practice research and has the potential to become a leader in the field. Ellen received this award in recognition of her research into prescription charges, and professional regulation and education, and delivered a lecture entitled 'Research informed pharmacy policy & practice: Answers to big questions – getting the detail right,' at the RPS conference in Birmingham in September 2014
