Biography

Harvard Medical School

I have been conducting research in microbiology and infectious diseases since receiving my Ph.D. in 1998. A major focus has been vaccine development, targeting surface components of bacteria, notably Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and more recently Acinetobacter baumannii and other gram-negative pathogens.

I have also extensive experience in bacterial pathogenesis, antimicrobial discovery, in vivo animal experimentation as well as administrative and personnel management skills, managing research grants and directing post-doctoral fellows.

In addition to my research activities I have tutored the “Immunology Microbiology and Pathology” and “Principles of Pharmacology” courses at Harvard Medical School. Currently I am teaching a course entitled “Vaccines in the new millennium” at the Harvard Extension School since 2013.

I have also served as an ad-hoc reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and of ten peer-reviewed scientific journals. Also I am currently Associate Editor for the journals PLOS One and BMC Microbiology.
