Stefan Schantl

I am a tenured Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer) of Accounting at The University of Melbourne. Prior to joining The University of Melbourne in September 2015, I graduated from the Doctoral Program in Accounting, Reporting and Taxation (DART) at the University of Graz (October 2010 to June 2014) during which I visited the accounting department at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (July 2012 to June 2013), followed by a position as Visiting Assistant Professor at Purdue University Krannert School of Management (August 2014 to May 2015). Before pursuing an academic career, I gained experience in public accounting, corporate treasury, management consulting, market research, and international trade.

My research is at the intersection of accounting, finance, economics, and law. I predominantly use microeconomic modelling to study how the institutional environment affects firms' financial reporting and disclosure incentives. Institutional characteristics my past and current research emphasizes relate to (i) the role of information intermediaries such as equity analysts and credit rating agencies, (ii) contemporary regulatory issues related to accounting and securities regulation such as internal control regulation, (iii) and the enforcement of regulations through institutions such as public enforcement or private litigation. My research was published in some of the leading academic accounting journals, including the Journal of Accounting and Economics and Journal of Accounting Research. I further serve as an ad hoc reviewer for journals such as Contemporary Accounting Research, Review of Accounting Studies, and The Accounting Review. Since the beginning of my PhD in 2010, I was invited to give over 50 research presentations at notable institutions and conferences worldwide, including at the 2018 Journal of Accounting Research Conference.

My teaching portfolio is generally broad. I have taught introductory, intermediate/advanced, and capstone courses on managerial and financial accounting in undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs. At The University of Melbourne I currently teach ACCT90013 Theory of Financial Accounting (advanced financial accounting subject in the Master of Management program) and ACCT30012 Reporting for Sustainability (elective subject that can be chosen by students across all Bachelor programs at The University of Melbourne). I am further an academic advisor to BCom students and served on the supervisory committee of several of my department's PhD students.
