Dr. Shirley Gatenio Gabel is a Professor at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service. Dr. Gatenio Gabel’s research focuses on human rights and social policies, particularly those affecting children. Dr. Gatenio Gabel has served as a consultant to UNICEF and UNESCO on child poverty and advocacy strategies, and social protection in developing countries.

She represents the International Association of Schools of Social Work at the United Nations and is co-chair of Social Work Day at the United Nations. Dr. Gatenio Gabel was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Bulgaria in 2005-06 and a Fulbright specialist in 2014 to Argentina.

She is a member of CSWE’s Board of Directors, chairs CSWE’s Commission on Global Education, is a Board member of the Katherine A. Kendall Institute and member of the International Network on Leave Policies and Research. She is the editor of a book series on rights-based approaches to social work practice (Springer, 2015-16), authored A Rights-Based Approach to Social Policy, and is the co-founder/co-editor of the new Journal on Human Rights and Social Work.
