As Clinical Associate Professor, Randy Deutsch, FAIA, LEED AP teaches Design Studio, Professional Practice, and Construction.
Randy is a licensed architect responsible for the design of over 100 large, complex sustainable projects, and has appeared in Architectural Record, Architect Magazine, DesignIntelligence and other periodicals.
Randy has served on Chicago Architectural Club’s Board of Directors, AIA Chicago Board as Director and Vice President, ARCHITECT Magazine R+D jury, an inaugural NCARB Professional Practice Scholar, and led an annual Executive Education program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Randy is recognized as a professional thought and practice leader, international keynote speaker (in the past 2 years he keynoted throughout the US and England, Italy, Finland, Australia, Beijing and Barcelona) and is the recipient of the AIA Young Architect Award-Chicago.
Randy served as the Associate Director for Graduate Studies at the School of Architecture from 2016 until 2019, overseeing graduate student recruitment, admissions, yielding activities, the award of scholarships/fellowships, enrollment, orientation and advising; coordinating reviews in graduate design studios; collaborating in alumni development efforts; and, contributing to operational and strategic planning beneficial to the school and the Director.
In 2020 Randy was elevated to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and as a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council (DFC).
Randy is the author of six books, including Superusers: Design Technology Specialists and the Future of Practice (Routledge, 2019) and Convergence: The Redesign of Design (AD, 2017), on the nature of the ongoing convergence of technology and work processes. Randy is also the author of Data Driven Design and Construction: Strategies for Capturing, Analyzing and Applying Building Data (Wiley, 2015), on the innovative individuals and firms who are leveraging data to remain competitive while advancing their practices; and BIM and Integrated Design: Strategies for Architectural Practice (Wiley, 2011), tracking the social and organizational impacts of the new technologies and collaborative work processes on individuals, organizations, the profession and industry. Randy also contributed a chapter in Workflows: Expanding Architecture’s Territory in the Design and Delivery of Buildings (AD, 2017).
Randy’s two most recent books are Think Like An Architect: How to develop critical, creative and collaborative problem-solving skills (RIBA Publishing, 2020) and Adapt As An Architect: A Career Companion (RIBA Publishing, 2021) on how to become and remain relevant throughout one’s career.
