Ramesh Fatania has 25 years’ broad international experience gained in Marketing, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, ERP Systems, Corporate Strategy and Planning, and Mergers and Acquisitions with BP (British Petroleum Plc). He possesses considerable experience in Post-Merger Integration, and has led many complex Global Change Management assignments within the BP Group. Now he is a consultant and coach on Strategy (formulation and implementation), M&A (post-merger integration), Leadership and Change. Other expertise includes: business turnarounds and enhancing effectiveness through process improvements.
Professional background After graduating in Chemical Engineering, Ramesh joined BP’s refinery in Scotland and held various positions from process engineering, plant operations and as Technical Manager developed the strategic options for the manufacturing site. Following his MBA, he joined the strategy, planning and control team, leading work on benchmarking, business performance reviews and developing strategic options for marketing and supply chains units. Then, as Operations Director, he led the transformation project of one of the Oil pipelines business in the UK. This was followed by a two year secondment, as Programme Director, to BP’s Lubricants blending facilities in Belgium which, included upgrading of facilities, closing facilities in France and Germany and transferring production to Belgium.
Since then Ramesh has worked on numerous M&A activities including: – BP/Mobil European JV (42 jurisdictions, transfer of 6000 staff, $2bn turnover) – post merger integration of refining and marketing business, rebranding of 9000 fuel stations, Synergy savings of $500m per annum. Programme completed in 2 years – BP/Amoco global merger – post merger integration of refining and marketing business resulting in synergy benefits of $600m per annum – BP/Mobil JV – Program Director – Dissolution of the BP/Mobil JV (following Mobil’s Acquisition by Exxon globally) and subsequent acquisition of Mobil assets in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean countries – Castrol – coordination of BP and Castrol brand strategy following the acquisition of Castrol PLC, resulting in clear brand positions and gross margin improvement – Divestment of marketing business in Europe
Ramesh also developed BP’s best practice on post-merger integration from BP/Mobil JV experiences and from external best practice successfully used in other mergers. – J&J acquisition of Pfizer OTC European Business: CEO and leadership team alignment workshops for Eastern Europe
Education and qualifications Ramesh holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College, London (1978) and an MBA from Edinburgh University (1986). He has taught in internal and external seminars, most notably on post-merger integration experience at Insead’s MBA class during 1998 to 2000.
