Biography

Professor N.R. Liu is educator, marketing and communication specialist, and journalist. He has strong interests in strategy, brand management, and marketing communications. In recent years, he has focused his research on higher education, with special interests in the areas of marketization and internationalization, as well as educational marketing and innovation. He has published journal articles in education and marketing, and a book in the field of marketization and decentralization of adult and continuing education in China. He serves as reviewer for International Journal of Educational Development, and Journal of Further and Higher Education. He also frequently gives lectures and speeches on wide ranging political, economic, and social issuess development.

He is currently Deputy Director (Business and China) at HKU SPACE. As the Principal of Institute for China Business (ICB) and Senior Executive Academy (SEA), Professor Liu aims to establish ICB and SEA as an Innovative School of Business and Management with specialties, and adopts a holistic approach to professional and executive education. He also advocates an innovative teaching methodology and proactive learning based on a unique 4P model which places emphasis on being Professional, Prospective, Practical and Problem-solving.

He has a broad background and experience in the field of media and communications. He was marketing communication practitioner and provided consulting services in the USA, before joining the University of Hong Kong in 2000, as Assistant Director of Journalism and Media Studies Centre. As a journalist in both China and the USA for over 15 years, he covered a wide range of issues including politics, economics, environment and international affairs. His reporting career provided him an opportunity to cover high profile news events, such as the former Soviet Union leader Gorbachev's historical China visit, and the US presidential elections of 1996 and 2000. He has published numerous awarded journalistic works and three books in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and the USA.

He was a senior fellow in Asia Foundation based in San Francisco, the University of California at Berkeley, and the International Institute for Journalism in Berlin. In 1996, he was awarded 500 most influential Asian Americans in the USA. He received a bachelor degree from Nankai University, China; a master degree from Indiana University, USA, and a doctorate degree from Bristol University, UK.
