Nathan Snyder

I have been enthusiastically teaching English Language Arts in various public secondary schools (both rural and urban) for over 18 years. I have a B.S. in English Education from Indiana Univ. of PA, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Moravian College, and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Research and Contemporary Learning from Fordham Univ., where I have also served as an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education. I serve various leadership roles in the Action Research Network of the Americas (ARNA): Treasurer, Lead Editor of the Proceedings, Executive Committee, & Coordinating Group because I believe conducting scientific research will better my own teaching practice. I am also the founder of an educational consulting business (learningdoctor.org) that helps schools create empowering curricula and aids individual students prepare for the college process.

I currently teach at a high performing public high school in Manhattan and could not be happier. NYC is dynamic and full of incredible learning opportunities. Overall, my teaching philosophy centers around building a culturally responsive environment that encourages students to become independent thinkers and learners by providing opportunities for students to uncover meaning by engaging with new content rather than simply by reading it from a slideshow. Preparing students for their next phase in life means helping them become lifelong independent learners.

When not working in academia, I enjoy exploring the various neighborhoods in Brooklyn, often with my French Bulldog, Potato (who occasionally makes cameos in my lessons). I’m certainly bound to be one of those older walking tour guides imbuing an oversized umbrella, as I love to research the rich history of NYC as I stumble upon new sights. I love sharing NYC with guests.
