Dr Xu got her medical degree from the Sun Yat-sen University in 2005 and continued her postgraduate studies in the Department of Community Medicine, HKU. She obtained her PhD degree on Epidemiology from the School of Public Health in 2012 and joined the School after graduation.

Her broad area of research is non-communicable chronic disease epidemiology in older people. She has been working on two on-going large cohorts in Southern China, namely the Hong Kong Elderly Health Services cohort and Guangzhou Biobank Cohort to explore the role of important modifiable risk factors, such as smoking, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and sleep problems on non-communicable chronic diseases. Her research interest also lies in looking at the health effect of sex hormones, especially testosterone and estrogen on cardiovascular health.
