Joanne Dushay

Dr. Dushay is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Attending Physician in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. As a clinical endocrinologist, her practice focuses primarily on metabolic diseases including obesity and type 2 diabetes; she also created a behavioral weight loss and wellness program at BIDMC called Wellpowered. Dr. Dushay is a PI in the field of obesity and metabolism and has mentored many fellows in the Division of Endocriology during their research training years. Her clinical research interests focus on the physiology and regulation of the hepatokine fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) as it relates to obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and the metabolism of fructose and glucose. Dr Dushay also studies the effect of pharmacothreapies and dietary interventions on body weight, including a large single-site study examining the effects of a glucagon like peptide receptor agonist on body weight in obese women without diabetes. She additionally collaborates with investigators at BIDMC to examine circulating and tissue biomarkers in obesity and other metabolic disease states. Dr. Dushay is a Vice Chair for the BIDMC Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Associate Program Director/Medical Director for the BIDMC Harvard Catalyst Clinical Research Center.
