Harvard Medical School

Liz Petersen, MD completed her BA at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2007, and her MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 2012. As an undergraduate, Liz spent a semester studying medical practice and policy in Denmark, where she developed an interest in global health systems. During medical school, she spent a year working in rural health centers in Ecuador, South Africa, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka, through which she became committed to the improvement of medical education and healthcare delivery in underserved communities. While in India, she partnered with local physicians to educate and train rural community health workers, with the aim of improving access to medical care. She has subsequently worked closely with the University of Minnesota’s International Medical Education and Research Office to establish international elective sites for medical students and residents in Asia and Africa.

After medical, school Liz spent a month running a mobile primary care clinic for women and children in northern Haiti. She also earned a Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers’ Health from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. As a Global Health Equity resident, Liz plans to pursue her MPH and will work to improve health education and global healthy delivery for underserved communities abroad.
