Biography

Cork University Business School

As Head of the Department, I have taken the view that it is my responsibility to put the structures and processes in place to create a research/innovation culture in the Department. The establishment of the research/innovation centres is to drive and disseminate the advance of knowledge and innovation to the services sector. We have already established a reputation for this among state agencies, as the University group that is delivering on the innovation agenda for Financial Services. The establishment of the Financial Services Innovation Centre (FSIC) is a strong manifestation of the strong linkages that we have developed with the Financial Services sector over the past 12 years. Research and Innovation work has been completed by the FSIC for the Federal Reserve Bank, Fidelity Investments, Bank of Ireland, Merrill Lynch, and 6 software companies. I intend to grow the work of the centre aggressively. I recognise the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the issues and problems facing the Services Sector, hence we have engaged with personnel from the Depts. of Management & Marketing, Government, and Law in our research.

My personal research strategy is to produce research that impacts practice which making specific to contributions to the fields of decision support systems and knowledge management. I developed a framework for the classification of DSS that has been used by a number of researchers in the field. The work on knowledge management (with Dr. Tom Butler) has proven to be very useful to State and International bodies.

Finally, my pet project over the next five years is to publish a definitive piece on the contribution of Peter Drucker to the IS field and to distil his contribution to our understanding of the role of information in organisations.
