Dr. Cecilia Chan is the Head of Professional Development in the Centre of the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Cecilia has a dual cultural background; she was originally born in Hong Kong but grew up in Ireland. In addition to her dual cultural background, she also has a dual discipline expertise in engineering and education; she has been playing an important role in enhancing and shifting education culture in Hong Kong and Asia both in higher and secondary education particularly in engineering, business and science. Her combined expertise in these fields and multi-cultural experience enabled her to lead and conduct research on topics such as assessment, technology enhanced learning and the development and assessment of 21st century skills from east to west in the different disciplines.

Dr. Chan’s work is being recognized in many parts of the world. She has been invited as keynote speaker and panel speaker to many international educational conferences in Korea, Singapore, United States, Estonia, United Kingdom, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia and Switzerland on teaching, learning and the assessment of generic competency including the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Being dedicated to developing engineering education, Cecilia is the founding chairperson of the E3R (Engineering Education Enhancement and Research) Asia network which not only act as a platform for engineering education researchers, teachers and practitioners to share innovative teaching practices and insights in engineering education, but also provide support in teaching and research, grants application, research and journal publications. The E3R Asia network has members in many countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, China, Macau, Australia, Turkey, Canada, United Kingdom and United States.

Cecilia holds a PhD in Engineering from Trinity College, a postgraduate diploma and a MA in Higher Education. She also held a Fellowship from King’s College London. Dr. Chan has involved in over 40 research/project grants worldwide. She is also the recipient of the University of Hong Kong’s Outstanding Researcher Award in 2015/16.
