Billy K. L. So is Vice Rector (Student Affairs) and Chair Professor of History of the University of Macau. Previously he was Chair Professor and Head of the Division of Humanities at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Chair Professor of History and Associate Pro-vice-chancellor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Author of Prosperity, Region, and Institutions in Maritime China (Harvard, 2000), and coeditor of Power and Identity in the Chinese World Order (Hong Kong University Press, 2003) and The Treaty Port Economy in Modern China: Empirical Studies of Institutional Change and Economic Performance (Institute of East Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley, 2011), he specializes in Chinese economic history, historical GIS and geography, legal history, and business history. His works have appeared in T’oung Pao, Annales: Histoire, Sciences Sociales, and the Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient, among others.
