Biography

Dr Alvin Chang’s areas of interests include neonatal ventilation, prevention of chronic lung disease of infancy (CLDI), neonatal transport, healthcare quality and patient safety activities. Using quality improvement methods, he introduced changes within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of KKH which resulted in reduction of CLDI by more than 50% among premature infants. The project won merit awards at the 2nd Singapore Paediatric and Perinatal Annual Conference 2013, the Ministry of Health Healthcare Quality Improvement Poster 2012 and was showcased at the PS 21 Excel Convention 2013.
Dr Chang leads the Neonatal department Quality Assurance activities and is involved with the KKH Joint Commission International work as a lead for the Care of Patients (COP) standards. He is a member of the Patient Safety Council and is a Patient Safety Champion. He is part of the Quality, Safety and Risk Management Team where he conducts and facilitates Root Cause Analysis (RCA) workshops. He co-chairs the KKH Medical Records Review committee.
He teaches both the undergraduate and post-graduate students by conducting evidence-based medicine workshops within KKH and at the SingHealth Centre for Resident and Faculty Development (CRAFD). He is a regular faculty at the yearly Asia Pacific Evidence-based Medicine and Nursing Conference organized by the National University Health System. Recently he has been appointed faculty of the Singapore Healthcare Improvement Network (SHINe).
Dr Chang is one of the few certified Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Instructor by the American Academy of Pediatrics based in Singapore. He teaches regularly at the Singapore Neonatal Resuscitation Course and the Advanced Pediatric Life Support Course.
Dr Chang was the President of the Perinatal Society of Malaysia 2010/2011 and currently is the Treasurer of the Singapore Paediatric Society, Internal auditor of the Healthcare Quality Society of Singapore and Secretary-General of the Perinatal Society of Singapore. He has published a Cochrane review on neonatal transport and other papers in various peer-reviewed journals locally and internationally.
