The world has been facing its greatest challenge so far in using its fixed land resources to feed rising population and produce energy from biomass while conserving forests to provide carbon offsets and sustain ecosystem service. How can we manage our current forests and agriculture land to meet demands for timber and wood biomass, without meanwhile impoverishing future generations from food and timber resources or exposing them to more vulnerable ecosystems and drastic climate changes? The transition to an efficient and sustainable land use pattern involves important inter-temporal tradeoffs.

My research focuses on the links between the economic systems, ecosystems and climate system from the perspective of land use changes. Rooted in economics, the research integrates theoretical and empirical efforts. As the problems are interdisciplinary and dynamic, I have had to develop and use a wide range of computational tools of dynamic optimization to conduct policy analysis.
