Steven Carvell

Dr. Steven Carvell, a professor of finance at the School of Hotel Administration, has 30+ years of extensive service at the School and University including: Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Academic Director of the Pillsbury Institute of Entrepreneurship, and the Cornell University Internationalization Council. He is taking on a new role as a member of the board of directors at eCornell.

Dr. Carvell's recent research projects have focused on comparing the performance of branded and unaffiliated hotels; the economic and capital market antecedents of venture capital cycles; proposing a new standard for the joint employer doctrine applied to franchising; and the valuation of exotic reservation options in hotels. He also published a major project on hotel demand in the U.S. and is currently working on a project to apply hedonic pricing and spatial economics to hotel rate structures in major U.S. cities. Dr. Carvell is involved with multiple businesses in the hospitality and education sectors and helps hotel companies evaluate their business strategies. He is co-author of the book In the Shadows of Wall Street. His work and insights have been featured in The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Fortune, Financial World, Institutional Investor, Leaders, and The Wall Street Journal among many others.

Dr. Carvell has worked for professional money managers in applied strategy in the equity markets, and he also served as a consultant to the Presidential Commission on the 1987 stock market crash. He has conducted numerous executive seminars for the largest hotel companies in the world focusing on training company leadership and general managers on how to approach management from the owner’s perspective. He holds a Ph.D. from the State University of New York, Binghamton.
