Sharon Yee

Adjunct Sociology Professor

Biography

My teaching philosophy is that higher education must provide individuals with the means to improve their socioeconomic status, to be informed community members, and an engaged global citizen. I think it is extremely critical to take a holistic approach to fully understand the multiple factors impacting an individual’s learning style and environment. I believe that everyone has a voice and something to contribute to the classroom. I work to incorporate student experiences, and encourage my students to be responsible and accountable for their own learning. My goal is to challenge each student to take a pragmatic approach with the information they receive in class and apply it to their everyday lives; learning should transform their journey through life. In order to improve learning experiences, I take a learner-centered, andragogical, constructivist theoretical framework approach and engage in multiple aspects of assessment.

I have fostered student learning through multiple teaching methodologies and assessments (i.e. practical and theoretical application of reflection and analysis (observable and measurable), classroom engagement in discussion and group participation, research, service learning, collaborative and experiential exercises, and evolutional analysis) in both traditional and compressed semesters through in person, hybird, and online formats. Incorporated multiple and engaging technologies into teaching (multimedia) and learning (PowerPoint, Prezi, Excel) to contribute and complement instruction through multiple course management systems (Canvas, Blackboard).

"The first wisdom of sociology is this: Things are not what they seem." -Peter Berger

I fell in love with Sociology my first semester in college. I didn't know what it was, but as soon as I completed that first course, a light bulb went on and I knew I had found my home. So many things made sense, and were not what they seemed. I wanted to share this knowledge with my community.

As a Phoenix native, I choose to serve my community in the Valley by giving back and educating and mentoring the next generation. I believe that it's important to enjoy the educational journey, because every step helps you arrive at your destination.
