Biography

Teaching I taught a wide range of anthropology/social science courses to both graduates and undergraduates, with particular focus on introduction to anthropology, culture and society, qualitative research methods, research in Southeast Asian societies, social memory, the emotions and social life, visual ethnography (including history of documentary/ethnographic film, and hands-on training in making videos for social research), kinship and social relations, comparative study of religions. I supervised the research of students at the Ph.D., Masters, and Honours levels.

Research I maintained a long-term research interest in Indonesia, specifically the Sa'dan Toraja people of highland South Sulawesi, about whom I have published extensively. I have also done qualitative, ethical and participatory research with children, on projects in Indonesia, Singapore, and cross-culturally in Southeast Asia/Pacific.
