Antwerp Management School

Prof. dr. Dr Renate Barbaix (°1979) holds a law degree (UIA, 2002, with great distinction). She holds a PhD in Law (UA, 2007) with a comparative law dissertation on the contractual status of the donation (The contractual status of the donation, Antwerp, Intersentia, 2008, 1130 p.). She worked as an assistant in family property law (2002-2007) under the scientific leadership of prof. em. Mieken Puelinckx-Coene and was appointed professor at the University of Antwerp in 2008, where she holds the chair of Family Property Law. She teaches national and international family property law, in addition to the general course Introduction to Private Law. She is also a guest professor at the VUB/ULB in the Postgraduate Certificate in Estate Planning (since 2007) and at the AMS in the Master in Personal Financial Planning (since 2011). She is a member of the executive committee of ATA (Antwerp Tax Academy). She became a lawyer in 2008 and was associated with the Greenille office as a partner. In May 2014 she joined ECGB Advocaten.

Prof. dr. Dr. Renate Barbaix is ​​a member of the Committee for Study and Legislation of the Royal Federation for the Belgian Notariat. She is a member of the editorial board of the prestigious series of Principles of Belgian Private Law and is also a member of the (core) editors of various magazines (including Tijdschrift voor Estate Planning and Notarieel Fiscaal Maandblad) and of the collection Inheritances, donations and wills. Article-by-article commentary with an overview of case law and legal doctrine.

Prof. dr. Dr. Renate Barbaix is ​​an expert member of the advisory council that, on behalf of the Minister of Justice Koen Geens, is examining the reform of property law and inheritance law.

Prof. dr. Dr. Renate Barbaix is ​​the author of the recently published standard work Handboek Family Property Law (Antwerp, Intersentia, 2016, 973 p.). She is also the author of various other books, contributions to books and articles in scientific journals in the broad family property law and related fields (contract and contract law, private international law and tax law). She often appears as a speaker at conferences, study days and seminars in the aforementioned fields.
