Researcher, Lecturer, and Consultant at  Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism (CTC), Leiden University, and Justice Q&A

My experience and deep interests:

I am based in: Amsterdam

I am an academic and a social advocate who is passionate about the intersection of the rule of law and security governance. I teach and conduct research at the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism, Faculty Campus The Hague, of Leiden University; as well as serving as a surveillance advisor to the Dutch section of Amnesty International. Additionally, I have my own consultancy Justice Q&A. My work focuses on the (side) effects of security for human rights, transitional justice and the sociology of law. I teach Master’s level courses on Security and the Rule of Law and International Crisis and Security Management and hold a PhD in Human Rights and the Sociology of Law from Utrecht University. Furthermore, I am a Member of Dutch Helsinki Comité and a Member of the Board of Advisors of the Dutch Platform to Protect Civil Rights, along with the Dutch Section of the International Commission of Jurists (NJCM).

My dream is to establish an international think tank that specializes in research, academic and public education, and social advocacy at the cross section of (national) security and human rights. I am married to Maarten Biermans and have three children Theresa (8), Julius (6) and Oscar (5).
