Nondumiso Phenyane is a lecturer in the Public and Mercantile Law Departments at Stellenbosch University. She is currently the course convenor for the final year module on the Law of Evidence. She also teaches basic principles of Labour Law, Insolvency Law, Security and Methods of Payment as part of a Mercantile Law service course. She holds a Bachelor of Social Science (B Soc Sci) and a Postgraduate Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Cape Town (UCT). Prior to joining Stellenbosch University, she was a Law Researcher at the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA). In line with her interest in procedural law, Nondumiso has done legal research for the Juta & Co Commentary on the Criminal Procedure Act since 2017. In 2016 Nondumiso worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the UCT, tutoring the Law of Evidence, Criminal Procedure and International Law.

In June 2019, Nondumiso was selected as one of the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans. In 2016, she was awarded the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) Ismail Mohammed Law Reform Essay price in the LLM category. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Ethel Walt Human Rights Scholarship for her LLM. Nondumiso is also a graduate of the South Africa-Washington International Program (SAWIP) – a leadership development programme which enabled her to serve as an apprentice at C-Span Cable Network and later at the Washington National Cathedral.

Nondumiso’s research interests are the Law of Evidence and access to justice in urban townships, criminal justice and conflict resolution.
