Harvard Medical School
Nikolaos Zacharias is a vascular surgeon in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of the faculty of surgery at Harvard Medical School. He also spends time in our affiliated hospital, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. His area of practice is abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, mesenteric ischemic, thoracic outlet syndrome, hemodialysis access and venous disease. He is particularly interested in improving social disparities in patients with vascular disease, as well as developing health policies to assure health equity and exceptional outcomes in patient care. He is nationally known for his work in the Society for Vascular Surgery Performance Measures Committee, and he is the Quality and Safety director for the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Mass General.
Dr. Zacharias conducts clinical research to improve vascular surgery outcomes. He has led several clinical research projects involving innominate artery revascularization, the establishment of duplex restenosis criteria for visceral stents, cost-benefit analyses of transcarotid arterial revascularization and outcomes of CryoVein revascularization for critical limb threatening ischemia. During his time as a research fellow at the Mass General Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, he focused his research on novel methods for management of polytrauma patients. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Vascular Surgery Venous and Lymphatic Diseases.
Dr. Zacharias takes an active role in the education of vascular surgery fellows, residents and medical students by providing lectures and operating room training. He dedicates time to teaching Mass General trainees how to identify areas of improvement in quality of care. Moreover, he mentors research residents on quality improvement projects focused on decreasing hospital length of stay for elective carotid endarterectomy and endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm patients.
