Biography

-

I straddle different cultures from two different countries in my daily life. This factor splits my perspective on everything that surrounds us in complicated ways. I like to bring that complicated way of seeing into my classes. I believe all students are enriched by encountering texts from contexts far away from their own. I have watched students learn and grow within a semester in undertaking rich and complex journeys of reading, writing, and analysis upon encountering such texts. We study poetry, fiction, drama, film, and popular culture.

Studying literature can be so much fun. Literature helps us gain a sensitivity to the world of language that surrounds us, that we are already embedded in. I design all my classes to help students rethink the world in which they are immersed and of the language they and others’ use and what these reveal of the various cultures they encounter. We do this by closely reading literary texts and placing these within their various contexts.
