Specialist in humanitarian action. 28 years' experience working in disaster assistance with the UN World Food Programme, and UNDP. First-hand experience of dealing with humanitarian crises in Sudan, Iran, Djibouti, Bangladesh, North Korea and Indonesia. Familiarity with UN System Headquarters in New York, Rome and Washington D.C. Extensive experience of coordination, negotiation, team-building, and crisis management.

7 years' experience of teaching and research at university level in the UK and the USA. Several publications on relevant humanitarian topics including issues of transition from relief to development, humanitarian diplomacy, and dealing with the Muslim world.

Currently interested in a broad range of humanitarian and development issues including:

  • The global food crisis
  • Humanitarianism and the Muslim world
  • Changes in the international aid environment
  • Impact of adversarial relations on development/humanitarian assistance.
  • Funding, access and feedback as the dominant themes in the relationship of aid agencies with donors, recipient governments and individual beneficiaries.

Providing effective leadership in countries in crisis, ensuring coordination, establishing strategic priorities, and undertaking advocacy in all types of humanitarian disasters, at all stages of a crisis, and dealing with all players involved, including donors, recipient governments, local authorities, NGOs, UN agencies, funds and programs.
