Biography
Lorenzo Masia graduated in Mechanical Engineering at “Sapienza” University of Rome in 2003 and in 2007 He accomplished his PhD in “Mechanical Measurement for Engineering” at the University of Padua. He spent two years at the Mechanical Engineering Dept. of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (2005, 2006) working at the Newman Lab for Biomechanics and Human Rehabilitation. Under the supervision of Dr. Hermano Igo Krebs and Prof. Neville Hogan. He designed the first prototype of InMotion Hand Robot for hand motor restoration, a modular device now commercialized by Bionik Lab & Interactive Motion Technology Inc.
He was at first postdoctoral researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and then Team Leader of the Motor Learning and Rehabilitation Laboratory of the Robotics Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department. His research was focused on design & development of novel mechatronic devices for rehabilitation and implementation of control strategies for human robot interaction.
With more than 10 years of experience in the field of Haptics, Robot-Aided Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Dr Masia was awarded multiple times in the leading conferences in Biorobotics and Robotic Rehabilitation winning two IEEE Best Student Paper Awards (IEEE ICORR2015 and IEEE Biorob2016), an IEEE Best Paper Award (IEEE ICORR2011), IEEE Best Presentation Award (IEEE Biorob2020) and IEEE Best Paper Award (IEEE Biorob2022).
Dr Masia has been appointed twice Program Chair for the IEEE International Conference in Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR) 2015 and IEEE Biorobotics and Biomechatronic Conference (BIOROB) 2016. He served as Chairman for Workshop/Tutorial for the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (IEEE ICRA 2017) held in Singapore on May 2017, and He was the Program Co-Chair of IEEE ICORR 2017 (London, UK). In 2018 He served Program Chair of International Conference on Neurorehabilitation (ICNR 2018) and Co-Program Chair, Editor in Chief and Editor of Publication for IEEE Biorob 2018.
And He will be General Chair of IEEE BIOROB 2024 which will be hosted by Heidelberg University.
Lorenzo Masia serves as Associate Editor for IEEE RAL Robotics and Automation Letters (2019-present), IEEE Transaction on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering (2019-present), Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation (2019-present) and Wearable Technologies, Cambridge Press (2021-present)
He was an Assistant Professor at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore, leading the ARIES Lab (Assistive Robotics and Interactive Ergonomic Systems) and then Associate Professor in Biodesign at University of Twente (The Netherlands) from June 2018 to March 2019.
Now he is Full Professor in Medical Technology and Biorobotics at Heidelberg University (Germany) at the Institute of Computer Engineering or Institut für Technische Informatik (ZITI).
He also holds an Adjunct Associate Professor position at University of Southern Denmark (SDU) where he collaborates with the The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute.
