Harvard Medical School

Dr. Goldstein is an emergency physician who specializes in neurologic emergencies. He received both his MD and PhD from the University of Connecticut Health Center in 2000, and completed his residency at the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency in 2005. He then completed a research fellowship in Vascular and Critical Care Neurology at MGH and BWH. He is currently the Director of the Center for Neurologic Emergencies in the Department of Emergency Medicine at MGH, the MGH Endowed Chair in Emergency Medicine Research, is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at HMS. He is a Fellow of the Neurocritical Care Society, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Goldstein has dedicated his career to multidisciplinary work integrating neurology, hematology, neurocritical care, and emergency medicine. He has served on the Program Committees for the International Stroke Conference, the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, and the Neurocritical Care Society. He has served on the American Heart Association Get-With-The-Guidelines Stroke clinical workgroup, and multiple AHA writing groups. Finally he has served as Associate Editor of various journals including Academic Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Goldstein manages a large extramurally funded research program focused on neurologic and hematologic emergencies. He has received numerous awards including the SAEM Young Investigator Award for his research and the Harvard Emergency Medicine Residency’s Outstanding Attending award for his teaching and clinical care. He has served as an invited speaker at many national and international forums. Finally, he has published over 150 original research articles, over 40 reviews and book chapters, and served as an Associate Editor of the textbook Scientific American Emergency Medicine and the Editor of the textbook Neurologic Emergencies.

Research

Dr. Goldstein currently manages a research program focused on improving the care of patients with neurological emergencies. With support from NIH, industry, and nonprofit sources, his team performs clinical trials in diseases such as stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and emergency anticoagulation reversal. He is the Principal Investigator for a New England-wide consortium of centers for the NIH-funded SIREN network of emergency care clinical trials. Dr Goldstein has lectured nationally and internationally, and has published over 140 original peer-reviewed research articles in the medical literature.
