Jennifer McLaughlin, MA is Instructor of American History in the Department of History at Sacred Heart University. Effective January 1, 2022 Ms. McLaughlin will lead our newly established Office of Student Advising and Success as executive director. Reporting to the associate provost for teaching and learning, Ms. McLaughlin will supervise the student success coordinators and work collaboratively across the colleges to lead, support and coordinate various student advising and success initiatives.

Since joining the history faculty in 2003, Ms. McLaughlin has served successfully and faithfully in our freshman-advising program. She also served as director of the Women’s Studies program. In 2015, Ms. McLaughlin was appointed assistant director of academic advising for CAS, and in 2020 was promoted to her current role. In this capacity, Ms. McLaughlin has led our university-wide first-year advising program, working closely with the Registrar’s and Associate Dean of Students’ offices. She has consistently brought her knowledge, patience, skill and resourcefulness to the critical work of freshman registration, implementation of academic policies, transfer and part-time orientations, academic actions, and the altogether coordinating across divisions essential to meeting the academic needs of our first-year students. Most recently, Prof. McLaughlin has served as a member of SHU’s Academic Continuity Task Force where she has been integral to supporting our first-year students’ navigate their complex academic experiences. Degrees: BA from Fordham University; MA from The College of William and Mary; Currently writing her dissertation for a PhD at William and Mary, entitled "We Can Find Them No Relief: James Monroe and the Plight of American Seamen, 1800-1812." Teaching responsibilities: Colonial and Nineteenth-century American history, Early modern British history.

Ms. McLaughlin is a member of the American Historical Association and Phi Alpha Theta.
