SDA Bocconi School of Management

Helen Banks is a Senior Researcher in the Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment Area at the SDA Bocconi School of Management.

A researcher with the Centre for Research on Health and Social Care Management (CERGAS), SDA Bocconi School of Management, Bocconi University since 2012, Helen has worked on various Italian and international projects, including the IMI2 Big Data for Better Outcomes (BD4BO), Policy Innovation, and Healthcare Systems Transformation (DO-IT) consortium, Bridge Health (EU Health Programme 2014-2020), Medtechta EU-FP7, and Eurohope EU-FP7. Italian projects have covered data-based studies using national, regional and Local Health Authority data in various therapeutic areas and policy areas such as Health Technology Assessment (HTA) for medical devices and artificial nutrition. Prior to joining CERGAS, her private sector experience included a long-term project with the Lombardy Region, hospital and local health authority accreditation using the Joint Commission International methodology, health education, and management consulting and business intelligence for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

Her major research interests include data and statistical analysis, exploiting techniques in data conversion, linkage, preparation, management and programming, for pan-European and Italian research projects to evaluate health care system performance, costs, resource use, care pathways and outcomes using administrative data from public and private health care organizations. She has lately also been focusing on Health Technology Assessment, medical device regulation, health care system planning, evaluation, financing and policymaking, as well as mapping and evaluating Clinical Pathways and chronic care programs using real world data.

She is the author of numerous articles in the health economics, health policy and HTA areas. Her work has been published in Health Economics, Health Policy, PlosOne, BMC Medical Research Methodology, Journal of Cancer Policy, and Europace, among others. Previously, she worked on newsletters, articles, books and manuals in the areas of pharmaceutical research, quality, US health system reform, and health education for the emerging AIDS epidemic. She is a member of the Italian Health Economics Association (AIES) and the Società Italiana Attività Regolatorie, Accesso, Farmacovigilanza (SIARV).

Helen earned an MA in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA, and a BA in Communications and Master in Education from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), USA. She is married with two children.
