Dr Lingam Gopal graduated from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam in 1979; MS (Ophthalmology) from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh in 1982; Fellowship in Vitreo retinal surgery at Medical Research Foundation, Chennai in 1983; FRCS (Edin) in September 2002 and MSs (Epidemiology) from London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 2016.

He worked as consultant in vitreo-retinal services at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India for 28 years before joining the ophthalmology department of National University Hospital, Singapore in April 2011, where he is a Senior Consultant. He has published 188 papers in peer reviewed national and international journals and has also written 30 chapters in various ophthalmic textbooks.
