Dr. Frederick Southwick, a professor and the chief of infectious diseases at the University of Florida College of Medicine, traded in his white coat and stethoscope for blue jeans and a backpack this year.

The 64-year-old has gone back to school at Harvard University and has a book in the works that could reduce the number of medical errors afflicting the health care system in the United States.
