Dr. Essa Mohamed is an experienced biomedical researcher with over 10 years of demonstrated history of working in the hospital & health care industry and received NIH funding for his postdoctoral training. Prior to this, Dr. Mohamed completed his undergraduate degree at St Olaf College and subsequently he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Sciences from Mayo Clinic with a focus on Clinical and Translational Sciences. He is experienced in conducting research across the translational spectrum and has collaborated with researchers globally. Dr. Mohamed is passionate about equity and healthcare delivery and made his primary research interests on racial and sex differences in pathophysiology of digestive diseases, cardiovascular diseases, systemic inflammation, and sleep disorders. Dr. Mohamed believes big data with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning will help identify and mitigate contributors to inequities in healthcare. Dr. Mohamed is currently in medical device innovation and is excited about the prospects of implementing his acquired biomedical science training to solve large unmet needs for the MedTech industry. He has consulted for various agencies from Department of Health to large multi-billion-dollar corporations in MedTech. His goal is to develop devices for a broad variety of clinical areas and through his training in the Bakken Medical Devices Center apply concepts of product R&D, insurance reimbursement, intellectual property protection, prototyping and business strategies. He is passionate about building startups and finding solutions to current unmet healthcare needs and to enable ALL patients to have access to high quality healthcare irrespective of their geographical location and socioeconomic status. Dr. Mohamed has strong and effective methodology in working with historically underrepresented populations in clinical research in a culturally responsive manner. His demonstrated skillsets in public speaking, grant and manuscript writing, critical thinking, R&D, entrepreneurship, effective communication, and leadership to manage interdisciplinary teams is applicable to any project or workflow. Awarded the prestigious Bush Fellowship for leadership development with the goal of working with industry leaders, academic institutions, foundations, investors, and other stakeholders to address the lack of and to increase the number of women and racial minorities participating in clinical trials and MedTech development.
