Dimitrios Spiliopoulos
Adjunct Professor of Internet of Things at the MBA at IE Business School
Biography
IE Business School
I started my career with international business in traditional industries (not techy at all) and this helped me understand how sectors like Manufacturing, Constructions, Mining, Retail operate, their processes, challenges and opportunities. I worked in India, Cyprus, Greece and covered the markets of Europe, Middle East, North Africa and CIS region. My roles were mainly related to International Marketing, Business Development, Market Analysis and Commercial Strategy for new markets.
After 5 years in industrial sectors, I quitted my nice job to do an MBA at the top tier IE Business School in Madrid, which helped me succeed the triple career change (Yes! Location, function, industry). There, I was President of the IE Strategy Club and I started a startup.
My IoT career started with an MBA contract in the global IoT team of Vodafone as Vertical Market Development Manager, focusing on Retail and Smart Home (healthcare & insurance). From the beginning, I discovered my passion for IoT as I realised how much it can help all the previous industries I had worked for and it became my mission to help companies realise the opportunities and thrive by using IoT and Data. After that, I established my own company, GL.IOT LTD, and worked in the IoT team of O2 (Telefonica) as contractor (until December 2019). I renewed 4 times, thus i passed from roles related to IoT Propositions, Evangelist, Consulting & Business Development for Smart Cities, Industry 4.0, Supply Chain, Energy and other sectors. In the meantime, I became Adjunct Professor at IE University (MBA), where I still lecture. I am speaking at conferences and I am mentoring IoT startups in several associations, like IoTUK, IoT Startupbootcamp and Reload Greece.
From January 2020, I decided to focus on my own business and clients for IoT Business Services through my company GL.IoT. Now I have the freedom to follow my passion and dreams by educating students and professionals about the business side of IoT and offering strategy consulting services to companies: IoT vendors and IoT adopters. One of my stable clients so far is Sony Europe and Albora Technologies, while I also advise other IoT startups. I also continue with mentoring (Wayra-Telefonica Accelerator, RG Greece, Athens Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation), lecturing and public speaking.
