Biography

Dr. Manstein is on the forefront of emerging technology and advancements in clinical dermatology as well as in aesthetics. His many accomplishments to date include the co-invention of Fraxel, or Fractional Photothermolysis, and the invention of Selective Cryolipolysis for Body Contouring, which led to the development of CoolSculpting by Zeltiq. This technology allows practioners to safely and effectively target and remove unwanted fat from patients.
Dr. Manstein is currently an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School and heads his research laboratory at the Cutaneous Biology Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. There he conducts basic and clinical research related to innovative laser applications and procedures in dermatology. His areas of special interests are laser tissue interaction, treatment of scars, skin aging, vascular lesions and tattoos, and non-invasive fat removal.
Dr. Manstein has published over 50 original medical articles and chapters in the field of cutaneous device treatments. Among those are several landmark papers introducing new concepts and treatments, which have become the standard of care. He is a frequently invited speaker at many of the national and international meetings in this field.
Dr. Manstein received advanced dual training in Physics and Medicine. He completed his medical training and obtained a Master’s in Physics and PhD in biomedical physics from the University of Münster, Germany and he completed a dermatology residency program in Ahaus, Germany. Once in the United States, Dr. Manstein completed a research fellowship at the Wellman Center of Photomedicine in Boston, a special clinical dermatology-training track, and a clinical fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Manstein holds active medical licenses in Germany, as well as in Massachusetts and Florida in the US.
