Dr. Brian Whang is a thoracic surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an instructor in surgery at Harvard Medical School.

After a career in social work, Dr. Whang received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate. While undergoing general surgery training at New York Medical College, he completed a research fellowship investigating cardiac stem cells. He then completed fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery and advanced cardiac surgery at Yale University and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Whang worked in private practice, specializing in cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery. He completed a fellowship in minimally invasive thoracic surgery at the Brigham before joining the division. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, lung cancer, benign and malignant esophageal disease, and thoracic oncology.
