Biography
Alison is a psychologist specialising in the field of the intellectual and developmental disabilities and quality of life.
Initially based at the Hester Adrian Research Centre, she managed research into the epidemiology of ''challenging behaviour'', and investigated the needs of informal carers and development of children with Down''s syndrome. As a Research Fellow at the National Primary Care R&D Centre, University of Manchester, her work addressed issues of access to mainstream healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities and the role of health checks in primary care settings.
Alison is now a Senior Lecturer at the Manchester Institute of Education, where her work continues to focus on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, particularly in relation to children and adults with Down''s syndrome and Austim Spectrum Conditions (ASC). She has a specific interest in the health / education interface particularly in respect of support for the wellbeing of young people with long term conditions. Most recently she has theorised on the nature of quality of life, with a view to developing applications of such understandings to improve the conditions and life chances of disadvantaged populations.
