Biography

Before coming to Manchester in July 2006, Tim Parkin was Professor of Classics & Ancient History at the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia), a position he held since July 2004.

From 1998 till 2004, he was Professor of Classics at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand). Before moving to Christchurch in 1998, he had been on the staff at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW).

Tim studied as an undergraduate at VUW, and then went on (or, as the English say, up) as a Rhodes Scholar to the University of Oxford, where he completed his D.Phil. in 1992; he also studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.

In 1997 he was an Alexander von Humboldt fellow in the Institut fuer Altertumskunde of the University of Koeln (Cologne, Germany).

Tim''s teaching is primarily within the area of ancient Greek and Roman history and languages.
In 2002 he was voted University lecturer of the year by the Canterbury Students'' Association. In 2013 he was shortlisted for the University of Manchester faculty lecturer of the year award.

Tim was administrative Head of Department at Canterbury Classics from 1998 to 2001, and served on Canterbury''s Academic Staffing Committee, as well as being a member of Academic Board. In 2002-3 he was deputy director of the University of Canterbury''s Organisational Structure Project, and within that project was chair of the Teaching and Learning working group, as well as being a member of the People working group. In 2003 he also served on the University''s "senior management team", as one of the academic staff representatives. Tim was head of Classics and Ancient History at Manchester 2010-12. He is currently the department''s admissions tutor.
