Dr. Tam Nguyen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science. Prior to coming to the University of Dayton, he was a research scientist and principal investigator at ARTIC research center in Singapore. He was also an adjunct lecturer at the National University of Singapore.

Dr. Nguyen received his Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore (NUS) under the guidance of Prof. Shuicheng Yan in 2013. Prior to joining NUS, he obtained his B.Sc. degree from HCMUS in 2005, and M. Eng degree from Chonnam National University, Korea in 2009. He graduated with first ranking in terms of GPA in bachelor and graduate studies. He completed his doctorate within 2 1/2 years.

He has 15-plus years of working experience in research and industrial sectors. His research topics include computer vision, applied machine learning and multimedia content analysis. He has authored and co-authored 80-plus research papers with 1,700-plus citations. He has secured more than $1 million in funding from different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, Lam Research, NVIDIA, Singapore National Research Foundation, Singapore Ministry of Education, UDRI and VINIF. He is the recipient of numerous awards including Young Vietnamese of the Year in 2005, the runner-up of ICPR 2012 contest on action recognition, the best technical demonstration from ACM Multimedia 2012, the best student paper award at NUS-GSS 2013, Singapore Polytechnic R&D commendation award 2015, the 3rd Prize at the CVPR 2019 contest of “DAVIS Video Object Segmentation Challenge," and 2021 IEEE Dayton Section Ravi Pallerla Memorial Award for Young Professionals. He is also a Senior IEEE member.
