Samuel Kai Wah Chu

Dr. Samuel Kai Wah Chu, is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. He was the Head of Division of Information and Technology Studies from 2013-16 and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Information Technology in Education from 2008-2017. He obtained 2 PhDs in Education – one focusing on e-Learning from University College London / UCL, Institute of Education (Ranked 1st in the world - QS 2020) and another one focusing on Information and Library Science from The University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Education (3rd in the world - THE 2020).

His research interests lie in the areas of gamified learning, social media in education, 21st century skills, plagiarism-free inquiry project-based learning, digital literacies, school and academic librarianship and knowledge management and intellectual capital. He has involved in over 60 research projects with a total funding of US$ 9,191,631, with US$3,507,334 for projects serving as the Principal Investigator.

He has published more than 340 articles and books with 82 appear in international academic journals. This includes key journals in the area of e-Learning (e.g., Computers & Education, The Internet and Higher Education, International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning), information and library science (e.g., Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Scientometrics, Library & Information Science Research), school librarianship (e.g., School Library Media Research, School Libraries Worldwide), academic librarianship (e.g., Journal of Academic Librarianship) and knowledge management (e.g., Journal of Intellectual Capital). His publication comprises 9 scholarly books with one on “21st century skills” and another one on “social media for internship” published by pringer Nature. He is also the author of a series of children story books published by Pearson Longman, including My Pet Hamsters and The Chocolate Boy.

Dr. Chu is the Co-Founder and Co-Editor for the journal Information and Learning Sciences. He was the Managing Editor for Journal of Information & Knowledge Management (2015-18) and was the Associate Editor for Online Information Review: The International Journal of Digital Information Research and Use (2012-16). He was an Editorial Board Member (EBM) for Library & Information Science Research (2013-18) and is an EBM for School Libraries Worldwide (2011-). With regards to public service, he is a Member of the Humanities and Social Sciences Panel of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (overseeing the most prestigious research grants in HK) and a Member of the Curriculum Development Council Committee on Learning Resources & Support Services. He has also served as a Member of the Assessment Panel on Information Technology in Education, Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence.

He has received a number of awards including the Faculty Outstanding Researcher Award in 2013, Faculty’s Knowledge Exchange Award in 2016, Excellent Health Promotion Project Award from Food and Health Bureau in 2017, and two awards from Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) - Chapter Member of the Year 2019 and Chapter Event of the Year 2019. He is the world’s 66th highest contributor to publications in library and information science between 2007-12 and has achieved an h-index of 32 over the years. He has been the Consultant for UNESCO Bangkok, Education Bureau, Oxford University Press, Pearson Education Asia, and serve as the Chair of ASIS&T Asia-Pacific Chapter (2017-2019). He is also an Advisor for EdTech startups at HK Science and Technology Park.
