Biography

Patricia Makoni is a Professor in the Department of Finance, Risk Management and Banking at the University of South Africa (UNISA). There she is responsible for the delivery of tuition of postgraduate modules in International Finance, Corporate Finance, as well as the supervision of full Masters by dissertation students, spanning across the broad finance spectrum. Prior to joining UNISA, Patricia lectured at the University of Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, as well as the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. On the professional front, Prof Makoni is an active Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Development Finance (CIDEF), supporter of the Ethics Institute of South Africa (TEI), and a member of the South African Institute of Management Scientists. She has served as an independent management consultant to various firms since 2008 to date.

Patricia obtained her PhD from the University of Witwatersrand Business School in South Africa in 2016. Her topic focused on foreign direct investment, foreign portfolio investment and financial market development in Africa. She completed her MSc (Finance and Investment) in 2007 at NUST. Her broad lecturing experience spans across development finance, international finance and advanced financial systems at universities in Zimbabwe, and South Africa alike. She currently serves as an adjunct Professor at the UNISA School of Business Leadership (SBL), as well as the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB). Prof Makoni is also well published, with over fifteen DHET accredited journal articles since 2014, and has supervised to completion a number of Masters and doctoral candidates. Her research achievements have seen her receiving the UNISA youngest female PhD graduate (staff) award in 2016, as well as the 2015 College award for the lecturer with the most output units over a five-year period. She serves as a peer-reviewer for various international journals, and an external examiner for Masters’ dissertations and Doctoral theses for the University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN), University of Witwatersrand, UCT GSB and the UNISA SBL.

Her research and postgraduate supervision interests are international finance, financial market development, corporate finance and development finance.
