Biography

I am an assistant professor (CZS Stiftungsprofessor für Big Data: In-Memory-Datenbanken und Datenanalytik) at the Institute of Computer Science of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany. I am also the founder and the head of JGU's Data Management research group.

My research interests are in data management and query processing with a special focus on non-traditional data types such as spatial and temporal data, text and graphs, and on modern parallel hardware.

Prior to my position at JGU, I was with the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University (AU) working with Prof. Ira Assent (2015-2017), the Department of Computer Science, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HUB) working with Prof. Dr. Ulf Leser (2013-2015), the Department of Computer Science, University of Hong Kong (HKU) working with Prof. Nikos Mamoulis (2011-2013) and the Department Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens (UoA) working with Prof. Afrodite Tsalgatidou (2005).

I received my Doctorate degree on Computer Science (Data Management) in 2011 from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. My thesis titled "Evaluating Queries over Route Collections", was supervised by Prof. Timos Sellis and Prof. Yannis Vassiliou.

I received my Diploma degree on Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2003 also from NTUA. My diploma thesis titled "Query Language for Hierarchical Structures" (in greek), was supervised by Prof. Timos Sellis.
