Karim has over a decade of international experience in impact measurement and evaluation, particularly for impact investing, social finance, and social enterprise. He was the Co-Chair of the Impact Measurement Task Force convened by the Government of Ontario, and the Canadian representative on the Impact Measurement Working Group of the G8 Social Impact Investment Task Force. He was previously Advisor to the Rockefeller Foundation on social impact measurement, and with the MasterCard Foundation on evaluating youth employment and entrepreneurship programs in sub-Saharan Africa. He has been a Fellow with The Impact Management Project hosted by Bridges Fund Management, and co-founded the Topical Interest Group on Social Impact Measurement at the American Evaluation Association.
Karim also brings substantive experience as a practitioner in impact investing and social finance. He established and led the Impact Advisory practice, where he advised a range of impact investors – including foundations, financial institutions, family offices, governments, and social finance intermediaries – to design, implement, and evaluate impact investment strategies. He has made significant contributions to field-building efforts in the Canadian social finance sector, including as lead author of “State of the Nation: Impact Investing in Canada”, co-founder of SocialFinance.ca, Senior Manager at Social Capital Partners, and Board member at the Canadian Responsible Investment Association. He also co-authored the comprehensive market review, “Accelerating Impact: Achievements, Challenges and What’s Next in Building the Impact Investing Industry”.
Currently a DPhil (PhD) candidate at Kellogg College, University of Oxford, Karim’s research focuses on impact measurement for impact investing. He teaches in the Oxford Impact Investing and Social Finance executive education programmes, and previously co-developed executive education curriculum and training on ‘Evaluating Impact Investing’ with several African-based institutions.
