Biography

Joakim is Assistant Professor at Jönköping University, School of Engineering. His research interests concern strategic renewal processes and the challenges they imply for managers in high-tech corporate contexts as well as public organizations. He builds theory by using qualitative research designs, including ethnography, case studies, and collaborative research, and mixed methods.

His research has been published in journals such as Long Range Planning, Creativity and Innovation Management Journal, and the Journal of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences, as well as in book chapters and numerous applied research reports, and research results are regularly presented at leading international conferences. Joakim has been awarded several best paper awards (EURAM 2011; EGOS 2018; SMS 2019) and outstanding reviewer awards (AoM 2016, 2017, 2018; SMS 2019). His dissertation was awarded the IMIT-prize in Sweden (2013) and he was granted postdoctoral research by the American-Scandinavian Foundation and Handelsbanken Hedelius Foundation. His research was recently (2021, May) included in the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences 100 List.

During postdoctoral studies 2013-2018, he was a Visiting Scholar in Stern School of Business at New York University, a Visiting Assistant Professor in Stockholm Business School at Stockholm University, and Senior Researcher at the Swedish Defense Research Institute (FOI).

Joakim holds a PhD in industrial engineering and organization and master's degrees in business administration (MBA) and applied psychology (MSc), and certified by EFDM (Brussels) in research leadership. His experience prior academia includes management consulting for companies such as Volvo and IKEA as well as the Swedish government and municipalities, and a career as a military officer (captain) including three years abroad in venturing intelligence services. Recent contribution to practice includes advisory to the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency in formulating its research policy 2019-2023, as well as moderating strategic innovation workshops and independent studies of new organizational solutions for innovation portfolio investments.

Current research responsibility:

  • Project Manager of Digital Transformation of Church, 2020-2021, a study financed by VINNOVA, Sweden's Innovation Agency.
  • Project Manager (JTH) of Leadership and Entrepreneurship in Småland (LEIS), 2020-2023, a joint project with Linneuas University, financed by the European Regional Development Fund, Swedish Growth Agency, Region Kronoberg, Region Kalmar, and the Kamprad Foundation.
  • Visiting Researcher (since 2020, January) at the Department of Technology Management and Economics, Division of Innovation and R&D Management, Chalmers University of Technology.
