University of Cape Town

I am a senior lecturer and convenor of the Honours and MPhil in Biokinetics degrees, within the Department of Human Biology, Faculty of Health Sciences, UCT. I completed my PhD in Sport Science in 2008 (Stellenbosch University). I hold a professional qualification as registered biokineticist (BK0005665) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. I have 19 years of teaching experience.

I currently lecture extensively at postgraduate level in Biokinetics, Exercise Science; and at undergraduate level in Human Physiology. I have supervised/currently supervise 2 doctoral, 4 Masters and 6 Honours students. I am regularly invited as external examiner/reviewer of clinical examinations and academic programmes at other academic institutions.

I have received a UCT Teaching Innovative Grant for Biokinetics Work-integrated learning (2019). My research focus is in physical activity and health, with a specific interest in obesity management. I have 16 peer reviewed publications and presented at 18 international conferences and 12 local conference proceedings. I currently hold an NRF Competitive grant for unrated researchers (2018-2020).

My social responsiveness duties include Vice-Chair of the Western Cape Biokinetics Association Committee, actively providing voluntary Biokinetic services in the Public Health Sector (Victoria Hospital, Wynberg – the Healthy Hearts Project), regular quarterly job shadow sessions with school learners, and serving on the electoral college to select a new Chancellor at UCT.
