Biography
I gained my undergraduate degree (BSc. Physiology) from the University of Aberdeen, completing an Honours thesis on epithelial transport processes. My subsequent Ph.D research at the University of Newcastle took place within the Epithelial Research group and under the guidance of Professor Nick Simmons. This focused on the regulation of ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters in the intestine via the pregnane X receptor. This was followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship with AstraZeneca, involving the use of modified Ussing chambers to establish a system for investigating the cross-species absorptive properties of new investigational drugs, encompassing permeability, active transport and metabolism. In 2011 I returned to academic science, taking up my current position as a Postdoctoral Research Associate within Professor Ralf Paus research group at Manchester University. My main interests centre around investigating mechanisms of hair follicle defence against enogenous and exogenous stressors, including oxidative and xenobiotic.
