Biography

Sotheby's Institute of Art

Till Vere-Hodge is an associate in the Firm’s Art and Cultural Property Law group based at our London office. Till works with international private collectors, art dealers and auction houses, galleries and museums, as well as art investors and advisors in relation to both, contentious and non-contentious matters.

Till has built up a particular expertise in handling restitution claims to looted artworks, in particular in the context of World War II. He advises clients on any legal, commercial, ethical and art market-specific aspects of restitution claims, including the planning and implementation of PR strategies. In so doing, he works hand-in-glove with the most highly-regarded provenance researchers. In addition to handling all aspects of claims to individual “red-flag” artworks, he also assists clients in devising and implementing internal guidelines and roadmaps for extensive audit projects. This process is designed to ensure that the clients’ overall approach to dealing with “red-flag” artworks remains consistent and clear, which can be crucial to the success of any audit project, in particular where the project in question is likely to attract media attention.

He is regularly called upon to lecture at various Art Law forums or comment in the media on matters pertaining to Art and Cultural Property Law. Recent examples include lectures at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art (London), the Royal Academy, the Federal Bar Council (New York), the New College of Humanities (London), the ARCA Art Crime Conference (Umbria, Italy), or the Art Market Day and the Centre Pompidou (Paris), as well as an interview on restitution matters on Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT 1.

Prior to his career in the law, Till worked for several years as a Public Diplomacy Officer at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in London. During that time, he worked for three German ambassadors to the Court of St. James and advised the German Foreign Office on the latest political, economic and cultural developments in the UK.

Till read History, Politics and Economics at Cardiff University and holds a Masters Degree in International Relations from Bristol University. He is a member of PAIAM and a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Till is fluent in German.
