Biography

Kenan-Flagler Business School

Tamara Barringer has over 35 years of experience in estate and tax planning, transactional business and commercial law, and estate administration serving entrepreneurial business clients.

She is an award-winning teacher in the Master of Accounting Program and the founder, director and faculty lead for the MAC Mentorship Program.

Professor Barringer’s courses focus on the tools of commercial transactions, such as contracts, agency, secured transactions, and negotiable instruments. She also teaches a course on securities regulation and various business entities (corporations, limited liability companies, limited partnerships, etc.), a course critical for aspiring accountants who either audit or plan transactions.

Her weekend-long ethics course features industry leaders from across North Carolina and the U.S., who lead discussions on real-life ethical dilemmas that accountants and business leaders will face in practice. Her MAC Mentorship mentees enjoy a leadership and professionalism class taught in a diverse environment, the focus of which is an Ernst & Young tax case competition designed specifically for the course.

Professor Barringer served in the North Carolina Senate from 2012 to 2018, where she served as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Joint Legislative Committee for General Government Appropriation. She wrote and sponsored 32 bills that became law with overwhelming bi-partisan support.

She now serves as Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

She is the former managing partner of the Barringer Law Firm, LLP, where she concentrated her practice in transactional tax and estate planning, estate administration and business law.

She received her JD with honors from the UNC School of Law and her BSBA with highest honors from UNC Kenan-Flagler.
