Biography

Rotterdam School of Management

During the early 80s, Stephen rode a bicycle from Kathmandu to Colombo, and across Indonesia (from Kupang to Jakarta), activating a lifelong interest in the region and sustainability.

After completing a PhD in Asian Studies and Communication (funding himself by tutoring, lecturing and editing academic papers), he moved to Hong Kong in early 2000, working for Asia’s oldest and most respected labour rights NGO, the Asia Monitor Research Centre. Returning to academia (where he taught, researched and published widely on labour law, health and safety, sustainability and worker rights in supply chains), he co-founded and managed Asia’s first CSR boutique consulting firm, CSR Asia.

Stephen has a wealth of experience consulting with companies in the Asian region, from Fortune 500 firms to SMEs. He has held advisory board positions assisting organizations on sustainability for Solidaridad, HP, and the GSCP. He worked on the first iterations of the labour indicators for GRI, and has written dozens of academic and popular articles and CSR reports. He has advised hundreds of companies on sustainability strategies, and is a recognized pioneer in sustainability in Asia. He is an Honorary Institute Fellow at the Asia Pacific Institute of Business (at The Chinese University of Hong Kong), and a visiting lecturer for an annual summer module on sustainability and business at the Rotterdam School of Management.
