Stephen Campbell

Overview

I am a Professor of Primary Care Resarch in the Centre for Primary Care of the Division of Population Health, Health Services Research and Primary Care. I was Principal Investigator, Director and Centre Lead of the £6,208,281 NIHR Greater Manchester Primary Care Patient Safety Translational Research Centre from 2012-2017 (GM PSTRC). I am Director and Principal Investigator of the £6,699,539 NIHR Patient Safety Translational Research Centre - Greater Manchester (PSTRC GM) from 2017-2022.

I am a health services researcher that has published extensively using a range of HSR methodologies on the quality of care and patient safety in general practice and primary (health) care, the development and application of quality improvement strategies, and the use of quality indicators and the impact of the Quality and Outcomes Framework and other national quality initiatives. This includes three articles in the New England Journal of Medicine and 13 in the British Medical Journal. I helped develop many of the quality indiciators used in the UK Quality and Outcomes Framework and set up and led the external contractor working with the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to support the ongoing development of indicators for the QOF.  I led the development of Practice  Accreditation scheme working with the Royal College of General Practitioners. I co-developed the European Practice Assessment accreditation scheme, which has received the 2009 award of the European Health Forum Gastein. This award (''European Oscar for healthcare'') is given to major innovations in European healthcare. I was Postgraduate Research Tutor for Primary Care from May 2007-April 2015.  I teach Primary Health Care on the Manchester MPH.

I am Professor of Primary Care Research at the University of Canberra and have an honorary contract as Professor of Primary Care Research at the University of Melbourne. I am a member of the Piperska Rational Prescribing group (http://www.piperska.org). 

I have grant income £22,000,000. I have an H-Index of 35  with >200 pblications generating > 8500 citations.

I am a Professor of Primary Care Resarch in the Centre for Primary Care of the Division of Population Health, Health Services Research and Primary Care. I qualified with a degree in Public Administration from Leicester Polytechnic  in Leicester in 1987. I then completed a Masters (MA Econ) course in local government at the University of Manchester in 1990. After working for a health authority I joined the University as a researcher in 1993 as a research associate at the Department of General Practice. In 1996 I moved to the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre, where I was a research fellow and then senior research fellow. I then became a Reader in Pimary Care before becoming a Professor of Primary Care Research. I obtained my PhD from the University of Manchester in 2002 on quality of care in general practice.

I am the course leader for the Primary Health Care Module of the Masters in Public Health/Masters in Research. I am deeply committed to an explicit focus on primary care in the MPH. I was postgraduate research tutor for primary care and the Institute of Population Health from 2007-2015

I have held a jointcontract at the Department of General Practice, University of Heidelberg, Germany and have held joint contracts at the University of Nijmegan, Monash University and the Australian National University. I have an honorary contract as a Professor of Primary Care at the University of Melbourne and am Professor of Primart Care Research at the University of Canberra..

I worked at the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre between 1996 and 2010 and I work currently in the Centre for Primary Care of the Institute of Population Health. My main research interests focus on the quality and safety of primary care and the development and application of quality measures and quality improvement strategies.
